In the blink of an eye your area could lose power, cutting off access to food, water, important information, and other items that your family may need access to. If this were to happen today, would you be prepared? Follow these quick tips to get started on an emergency kit that could be crucial in the event of a disaster.
· The necessities: Food and Water – Check your pantry! You should always have at least a two-week supply of nonperishable food that can sustain everyone in your household. If power is lost, frozen and refrigerated foods can quickly expire. The Red Cross also suggests keeping a two-week supply of clean water for each person in your household. This should be one gallon per person, per day. One key thing to remember is that your pets will also need a supply of food and water to outlast any disaster!
· Important safety items – Some of the most important tools that you can keep in your house are flashlights. In the event of a disaster, a lack of light can be both frightening and extremely dangerous. A hand-crank radio is crucial for following safety instructions and staying informed on the status of this event. A first-aid kit should always be kept on hand in case of injury. Other important items include medication, personal hygiene items, and blankets.
· Important documents – It is always important to include paperwork in your emergency kit. This can include documents such as emergency contact information, copies of important personal documents that could be damaged, medical records for your family and pets, and insurance information.
· Personalize your kit – Now it is time to make your disaster kit your own. Do you have young children? Include a few games to keep them occupied. Include tools you may need, maps of the area, emergency cash, and other items that your family may need.
