I was born in Charleston, SC in 1947 and grew up in downtown Charleston. I attended Memminger Elementary and High School of Charleston and graduated from North Carolina State University cum laude in 1969 with a BS degree in mathematics.
After college, I volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy, attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and was commissioned a reserve officer in April 1970. I served as an intelligence officer and navigator aboard a guided-missile destroyer stationed in San Diego, CA. While I was onboard the ship, we made three transits across the Pacific Ocean and saw a good bit of action in the Vietnam War. My active duty service ended in November 1972, and I actually remained in the Navy Reserve for another 23 years, retiring with the rank of commander.
I joined my father and brother at C. T. Lowndes & Company on December 1, 1972, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the agency. I am very proud to be the fifth generation of the Lowndes family to own and operate the business. I ran the business from about 1983 until 2008 when I relinquished the agency’s day-to-day operation to Bill Silcox.
I married Esther Moseley in 1981, and we have two daughters, Alice and Sarah. Both are College of Charleston graduates, and both are doing very well in life. Alice is married to a wonderful young man, Brad Taylor, and they live on Lake Murray. Sarah worked in Baltimore for five years as a human resources specialist and moved back to Charleston in 2015. Both Alice and Sarah work for the family agency. Esther and I have no grandchildren but do have five granddogs.
I served on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries of Lower South Carolina from 1981 to 1986 and was chairman of the board for two years and continue to be involved in this organization. Goodwill is certainly my favorite charity. I am constantly amazed by all the good things they do.
Earlier in life, I was very active in the Optimist Club of Charleston and was a youth baseball, softball, and football coach for many years. From 2011 to 2015, I was involved in helping the Sertoma Club of Charleston stage the annual Sertoma High School Football Classic.
I am an outdoors person, and I enjoy deer hunting and hog hunting in the woods of Millbrook and Middleton Plantation and horseback riding at every opportunity. I spend most weekends at our country house on the Cypress Gardens Road in Berkeley County.
My wife and I enjoy traveling and visiting the National Parks. We visited Big Bend, the Guadalupe Mountains, and Carlsbad Caverns in the spring of 2016 and Sequoia and Kings Canyon in the summer of 2016. 2017 took us to South Carolina’s very own Congaree National Park. We saw Cuyahoga Valley NP (Ohio) in 2018. In 2019, we stopped at Wind Cave NP and Badlands NP in South Dakota. After a “COVID Travel Break”, we visited, in 2021, White Sands NP in NM, New River Gorge NP in WV, and 3 parks in Colorado – Rocky Mountain NP, Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, and Great Sand Dunes NP. In 2023, we went to Great Basin NP, Lassen Volcanic NP, Pinnacles NP, and Channel Islands NP. We have 3 parks left to visit in the lower 48 plus Hawaii. In 2018, we visited three Canadian National Parks: Banff, Jasper, and Kootenay. What amazing places!
We just recently visited the state of Kansas, and I have now been in all 50 states. A milestone has been reached!
We have taken a few river cruises in Europe and many ocean cruises. In April 2015, we cruised from Budapest to Amsterdam on the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers. In March 2017, we took a Mediterranean cruise with stops in Italy (Rome and Naples), Israel, and Greece. In April 2018, we traveled the Douro River in beautiful Portugal. And late in 2018, we cruised to the Amazon River in Brazil.
In addition, in the summertime, in an effort to beat the heat of Charleston, we frequent our mountain house in North Carolina, and I do a lot of hiking while up there. Grandfather Mountain is one of my favorites.
My daughter Sarah and I have done several weeklong whitewater-rafting trips out West on the Snake, Salmon, and Rouge Rivers. In September 2015, she and I rafted the length of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. This was the experience of a lifetime, a 14-day journey through a Canyon of endless beauty.
At C. T. Lowndes & Company, as of February 1, 2017, I have passed the responsibilities of running the business to a new and younger generation. My role is to review your accounts and make sure your assets are properly insured and that you are getting the best coverage for your dollar. I certainly cannot review all accounts but am always happy to look at particular accounts upon request. Your satisfaction is very important to me.
I served on the executive committee of the Independent Agents Association of Greater Charleston from 1993 to 1995. I was honored to be awarded the Haynes P. Glover Jr. Agent of the Year award in 2010 by the Independent Agents Association of SC. The Charleston Area Insurance Professionals has chosen me as Boss of the Year three times: 2000, 2005, and 2007.
In closing, let me thank you for reading this and for doing business with my agency. I appreciate you trusting us to look after your insurance needs.
